6/6/2023 0 Comments Brubaker cruel summer![]() ![]() ![]() In fact, the nine issues here are written like standalone stories as each one focuses on the perspective of one or two characters, not just the Lawless family.Ĭonsidering that Criminal often focuses on the clichés of the crime genre, Brubaker has to approach these stories in ways that are realistic and believable, which doesn’t always work - I couldn’t emotionally engage with the junkies from My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies. That’s tradition in Criminal: telling self-contained narratives that focus on different characters. This story ties in with the original Criminal comics, as it has the cast of characters, but you can pretty much read this as a standalone feature. Meanwhile Layla, another girl at the studio, is struggling with her own abusive situation as her boyfriend, Donovan, gets more and more aggressive, and her public humiliation enables her to be sympathetic to Diamond's exposure. Her drugged state allows for the multiple rapes she endures to be only hinted at and affords her a mechanism of oblivion when she eventually escapes that makes the aftermath less traumatizing. He keeps Diamond locked up and drugged for six days while her family and friends fear for her. ![]() They all still dream of fame in the larger world, however, so when Diamond meets a man who claims to have a daughter her age and connections to some big stars that he's casting for a movie, she abandons common sense and goes with him to an "audition," which turns out to be an internet porn operation. Diamond and her friends love dancing at Crystal Pointe Dance Academy. ![]() 6/5/2023 0 Comments Calamity physics book![]() ![]() The first two-thirds of the book describes the long, fraught initiation of Blue into this glamorous and insular group, while the last third concerns Blue's mounting suspicion that her enigmatic and beautiful teacher was somehow murdered. There she encounters the Bluebloods, an elite group of students who are the proteges of a charismatic film studies teacher, the compellingly mysterious Hannah Schneider, whom, we learn in the opening pages, Blue will find hanged during a camping trip. ![]() Blue spends her final high-school year at a private college in North Carolina. The novel is the first-person narrative of Blue Van Meer, a bright teenager who since her mother's death has travelled the country with her arrogant, pompous but devoted father Gareth, a peripatetic lecturer in political science who is, in his daughter's eyes, "one of the pre-eminent commentators on American culture". Published in the US to reviews of saucer-eyed admiration and already in its fifth printing there, Special Topics in Calamity Physics carries a heavy burden of expectation, which it only partly fulfils. ![]() This young American author's first novel, the subject of a bidding war, was eventually sold to Penguin for a six-figure sum. ![]() ![]() It’s a story about a man who falls in love with a ghost and goes mad. The first story in here, The Beckoning Fair One, seems to be Onion’s most famous work. I read Widdershins, probably his most famous collection of ghost stories first. Klein’s The Ceremonies that I decided to read him. I had seen collections of Oliver Onion’s ghost stories around for years, but it wasn’t until I came across his name being mentioned in T.E.D. I read Widdershins and wrote the following paragraphs almost a year ago, but I only read the remainder of Onion’s ghost stories over the last couple of months. This collection is almost 700 pages long, and it contains Widdershins (1911), Ghosts in Daylight (1924) and The Painted Face (1929), all three of the collections of ghost stories that Onions put out in his lifetime, along with a few other bits and pieces. I originally planned to just read Widdershins, Oliver Onion’s most famous collection of ghost stories, but after finishing that collection ( it’s available online), I decided to read the Wordsworth anthology of his collected ghost stories.
